Updated 2 Nov 2026 · 1 min read · By Capital & Context editorial team
Funeral cover, also called last expense cover, pays a set amount quickly when a covered family member dies, to meet funeral costs. It is commonly used by families who would otherwise have to borrow or fundraise at a difficult time.
Who is covered?
Policies differ in who they cover: you only, or you and members of your family. Check exactly who is named on the policy.
What do people commonly watch for?
- Waiting periods. Many policies have a period after you start when you can't claim yet. Ask how long it is.
- The amount. It pays a set sum. Check it would cover a funeral where your family lives.
